Symposium Session Notes

Keynote Speaker: Mr. Ted Stephens, Innovative and Exciting Plants for Deep South Gardens Ted, owner of Nurseries Caroliniana, will examine some exciting plants with which you may not be familiar that can give many seasons of form and interest. One can have shrubs and trees in flower twelve months of the year in the Deep South. Ted will be looking at many new introductions offered for the first time in the Western hemisphere, which he has brought from his explorations around the world. Nurseries Caroliniana has mail order, retail and wholesale divisions, which make these selections available to the public. Many plants are also shipped to some of the leading nurseries in other parts of the world.

Ms. Phyllis Meole, Heather Kelejian, Claire Hetzel,: Incorporating Successful Nature-based Activities into a HT Program These three ladies are coming to us from the New Hanover County Arboretum in Wilmington, NC known for its Ability Garden. They will be identifying elements that need to be included in a therapeutic program, addressing specific treatment goals, selection of activity based on skill level, availability of materials, seasonality etc., and some successful activities they have used. There will also be time for questions and sharing of ideas.

Ms. Nancy Easterling: Raising Our Standards: AHTA Professional Registration Nancy is the Immediate Past President of AHTA. She is currently employed with the NC Botanical Garden in Chapel Hill, NC. The American Horticultural Therapy Association recognizes and registers horticultural therapists through a voluntary professional registration program. AHTA's board has implemented changes in order to raise the standards required for those who want to enroll in this program. Nancy will be describing the new professional registration procedures and then will open the session for questions.

Mr. John Murphy: BOOST: Using the Garden for Special Needs High School Students John, coordinator of the Bullington Center since 1999, will make a presentation on the BOOST program. It is a weekly work-based program for about 35 special needs high school students doing landscape and horticulture to hone their job skills.

Ms. Margot Rochester: Every Garden is a Healing Garden Margot, is a Lugoff, S.C., writer, whose book, "Earthly Delights: Gardening by the Seasons the Easy Way," was published in 2004. Her second book is to be published in January 2009. A garden columnist for two South Carolina newspapers and for Carolina Gardener magazine, Margot has spoken before audiences from Georgia to Philadelphia and throughout the Carolinas. She is a retired high school English teacher, holds a doctorate degree from the University of South Carolina and presents adaptive gardening programs for Palmetto Health Alliance. Her CCAHTA conference session will offer help in building confidence in clients and rethinking garden tasks.

The Garden At Thornhill Farm: Healing Farms Ministry located in McClellanville, SC, started a horticultural therapy program in 2007. Students from local high schools come to the garden every other week for an hour of structured horticultural therapy. HFM has created the infrastructure for a several acre garden that has begun to produce revenue through the support of the horticultural and vocational therapy programs. The long term vision for HFM is a sustainable farm community that employs and supports an integrated population of individuals with and without developmental disabilities.

Silent Auction and Resource Area: A silent auction is held each year during the annual symposium to benefit CCAHTA Grants Program. Businesses and individuals throughout the Carolinas donate auction items. Winners of the individual items will be announced at the end of the symposium. Exhibits and horticultural information will be available in the resource area throughout the day. Anyone interested in donating an item to the silent auction, having a display table in the resource area or providing materials applicable to horticultural therapy, should contact Johnica Ellis at jdjellis@aol.com.
